Chapter 10

Sophia

I’d been tempted at the airport to go with my friends, who were all staying at Logan and Charlotte’s home. Logan and Charlie were brothers, and their wives were my friends. They’d made it a party once Amelia accepted.

However, the sparks in my veins reminded me I wanted to know more about Harris and his life.

He made me feel things I’d thought impossible, but my brain didn’t want to put labels on it.

We drove in his Mercedes G-Class SUV to his castle. As we drove through the outer walls, which had a drawbridge, I saw people in a small village. I pivoted toward him and asked, “This is your home?”

He pointed at the castle behind the next set of walls. “Yes, smaller than your friends’ home, but mine’s five hundred years older. My house was made to keep the bloody English bastards or anyone else that might invade out.”

I laughed at the ferocity of that statement. He’d picked me up on the side of a road in England, but absolutely, safety was important. I’d seen documentaries on what the Vikings had done in Scotland too. As we headed down the cobblestone street, I asked, “And people other than you live inside the walls?”

The limo stopped in front of the next wall, which meant we had to walk.

“The outer walls, aye. I have a village, though these days, it’s banks and internet cafes and restaurants.”

The doors opened, and I stepped outside and gazed all around, holding my breath. I looked up at the stone walls and wondered if anything ever penetrated them.

I swallowed as he pressed his hand on my lower back to direct me inside.

“It’s beautiful.”

“Wait till you see the place.”

Men in kilts opened the doors for us.

Not all men had muscles, but clearly the Scots took athletics seriously.

I ached to see Harris’s legs again, though until I’d been to Charlotte’s wedding, I’d never thought kilts were sexy.

His muscular legs made me hope the hidden parts of him were just as strong, and if we did have sex, I might be forever bonded to him, as I wouldn’t want to leave. I shook off the thought fast.

He flipped the lights on, and a huge room appeared.

It was a place for a celebration. He didn’t seem to take in the room. The white walls had windows that presented a view of the distant mountains. My breath stalled at the sight.

He directed me to a staircase on the right, and up we went. After the second landing, the stairs became circular, and we ended up in a room with a view of the town below and the mountains.

The five-star hotel and Charlotte’s house used to be the nicest places I’d stayed. Charlotte’s place was huge and filled with people and long lines for the buffet, but at Harris’s house, my room seemed brighter and warmer despite the stone. “Why are you so nice to me?”

The staff arrived with my luggage and his gifts from the hotel, and he directed them on placement.
